Do You Have Ink Dripping From Your DTF Printheads?

One of the more alarming issues a DTF printer owner can experience is seeing ink slowly dripping from the bottom of the printheads. Not only does this create a mess inside the printer, but it can quickly ruin prints, contaminate the capping station, and in severe cases, damage expensive printheads.

The good news is that ink dripping is usually not caused by the printhead itself. In most cases, it is a symptom of another problem somewhere in the ink delivery system.

Understanding why this happens can help you identify the root cause before replacing unnecessary parts.

Why Does Ink Drip From a DTF Printhead?

Most industrial DTF printers use a gravity-fed ink delivery system. Ink flows from the tanks through filters, tubing, dampers, and finally into the printheads.

Under normal conditions, the system maintains a delicate balance of pressure. The dampers serve two important functions:

  • They act as small ink reservoirs.
  • They function as check valves, preventing ink from freely flowing through the printhead.

If air enters the system or a component can no longer maintain this pressure, gravity can begin pulling ink through the nozzles, resulting in visible dripping.

Think of it like putting your finger over the top of a drinking straw. As long as the seal is maintained, the liquid stays inside. Once air enters, the liquid immediately falls out.

The same principle applies to your DTF ink system.

The Most Common Cause: Air Leaks

The majority of printhead dripping issues are caused by an air leak somewhere between the ink tank and the printhead.

Common locations include:

  • Loose ink line fittings
  • Cracked ink tubing
  • Damaged O-rings
  • Poorly seated dampers
  • Worn damper seals
  • Loose manifold connections
  • Ink filter connections

Even a tiny air leak can disrupt the pressure balance enough to allow ink to continuously drip from the nozzle plate.

Stop Printing Immediately

If you notice ink dripping from your printhead, stop the printer immediately.

Continuing to print can cause:

  • Ink pooling on the media

  • Head strikes

  • Cross-contamination between colors

  • Nozzle plate contamination

  • Permanent printhead damage

Using a clean, lint-free wipe, carefully remove any ink from the bottom of the printhead before beginning your inspection.

Never scrape the nozzle plate or apply excessive pressure while cleaning.

First Step: Inspect the Dampers

Because dampers are considered wear items, they are the first component that should be inspected.

Look for:

  • Ink leaking around the damper seal
  • Cracked plastic housings
  • Loose fittings
  • Air bubbles inside the damper
  • Dampers that do not completely fill with ink

If a damper appears questionable, replace it.

After installing the new damper:

  • Make sure it is fully seated on the printhead manifold.
  • Verify that the locking mechanism is secure.
  • Inspect all surrounding ink line connections.

Many dripping issues are resolved simply by replacing a damaged damper.

Clean the Printhead

Once the damper has been replaced:

  1. Move the carriage to the maintenance position.
  2. Using a lint-free wipe, gently clean the bottom of the printhead.
  3. Observe which ink colors are dripping.

This information can help narrow down the source of the problem.

One color dripping

Typically indicates:

  • Failed damper
  • Damaged manifold seal
  • Printhead damage affecting one channel

Multiple colors dripping

If all four channels on a printhead are leaking, the issue is often farther upstream.

Possible causes include:

  • Air entering before the manifold
  • Loose tubing
  • Ink line leaks
  • Pressure imbalance within the ink supply system

Could It Be Too Much Capping Fluid?

Sometimes the problem isn't an air leak at all.

If excessive capping fluid is placed in the maintenance cap, the cleaning cycle can force fluid upward into the nozzle plate and dampers.

This temporarily changes the ink's viscosity and can create dripping immediately after a cleaning cycle.

If the dripping stops shortly after wiping the printhead, excess capping fluid was likely the cause.

For Binterjet printers, approximately 3 ml of capping fluid is generally sufficient to keep the nozzle plate moist without forcing fluid into the ink system.

More is not better.

Other Possible Causes

If replacing the damper does not solve the issue, continue investigating.

Damaged Printhead

Although less common, internal damage to the printhead can allow ink to bypass the normal ink chambers and leak continuously.

This often requires printhead replacement.

Failed Damper Seal

A damper that appears normal can still have an internal valve failure.

Because the valve no longer regulates ink pressure correctly, ink can flow freely through the printhead.

Replacing the damper is usually the solution.

Incorrect Ink Viscosity

DTF inks are carefully formulated to operate within a specific viscosity range.

If the ink becomes too thin, it may flow excessively through the printhead.

Possible reasons include:

  • Expired ink
  • Ink contaminated with cleaning solution
  • Poor-quality ink formulation
  • Improper storage temperatures

This is one reason Imperial DTF strongly recommends purchasing high-quality inks from reputable manufacturers.

Cheap formulations often sacrifice chemistry consistency, leading to issues like clogging, poor white ink stability, or excessive ink flow.

Mixing Different Ink Brands

Not all DTF inks use the same chemical formulation.

Different manufacturers use different:

  • Humectants
  • Glycols
  • Surfactants
  • Pigment dispersions
  • Preservatives

Mixing incompatible inks can alter viscosity and surface tension, resulting in unpredictable printhead performance—including dripping.

Never change ink brands without performing a complete ink system purge.

Failing to do so can create chemical incompatibility inside the dampers and printhead.

Prevent Future Ink Dripping

Preventative maintenance is far less expensive than replacing a printhead.

Good habits include:

  • Replace dampers at recommended service intervals.
  • Inspect ink lines regularly.
  • Keep fittings tight.
  • Use fresh, properly stored ink.
  • Agitate white ink daily.
  • Avoid overfilling maintenance caps with capping solution.

  • Perform routine nozzle checks before every production run.

  • Address small air bubbles before they become large air pockets.
