DTF Prints Washing Out? Here’s What’s Going Wrong (And How to Fix It)
Steve SouthardWhy DTF Prints Wash Out
When a DTF print fades or washes out, it’s not random. It means the bond between ink, adhesive powder, and fabric was never fully stabilized.
Washing exposes every weak point in your process.
The 5 Main Causes of Washout
1. Under-Cured Adhesive Powder
If the powder isn’t fully melted:
- It bonds superficially
- Breaks down in wash cycles
Fix: Ensure full melt (not grainy or dusty finish)
2. Low Heat Press Temperature
If temperature is too low: Adhesive never fully activates
Fix: 280-300°F (consistent across press) There is some variation based upon the supplies you use. This is what we recommend for using supplies from ImperialDTF.com Here are the recommended settings for our products: Blog Article
3. Insufficient Pressure
Without proper pressure: Adhesive doesn’t embed into fibers - but don't turn the pressure all the way up - you'll end up ruining the handfeel and make it brittle.
4. Poor Fabric Compatibility
Some fabrics resist bonding:
- Moisture-wicking polyester
- Treated synthetic blends
5. Weak Ink Laydown
If ink layer is too thin: Wash cycles break pigment layer first
Prevention Strategy
- Always pre-press garments
- Standardize press settings per fabric
- Test wash samples before full production
Washout is almost always a process issue, not a product issue. And as always, we recommend doing wash tests often - especially before a big run!
