Looking to buy a DTF printer?

Before Investing in DTF Technology: What You Need to Know

Before committing to a major investment in Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing, it’s crucial to understand the equipment options, available support, recommended supplies, and the technical skills required to operate and maintain the printer you're considering.

Who Will Support You Through the Process?

DTF Manufacturer: If you’re relying on the manufacturer for education or a comprehensive owner’s manual, be prepared for disappointment. Most DTF technology originates in China, and it’s rare to find detailed user manuals, electrical schematics, or any reliable guides included with the machines.

Distributor: While we don’t mean to criticize salespeople or distributors, our experience has shown that very few people fully understand this emerging technology. Don’t be afraid to ask tough questions not only about the printer’s durability but also about the distributor’s level of expertise. If you’re expecting reliable support, it's essential to assess their knowledge early on.

YouTube “Experts”: While YouTube is a valuable learning tool, not everything you find online is trustworthy. Many so-called “experts” are primarily focused on selling products. We’ve even seen experts at trade shows who couldn’t troubleshoot their own printers or whose prints were of poor quality! Not every YouTube channel is untrustworthy, but it’s important to do your due diligence.

Key Factors to Evaluate Before Committing to DTF:

Print Quality: Most DTF printers use the same Epson i3200 printheads, so print quality should generally be consistent. If the quality doesn’t meet your expectations, it’s often a sign that the operator may not fully understand the technology rather than a fault with the machine.

Request Samples: When comparing machines, request samples from each printer you're considering. Here are some steps to guide your sampling process:

  1. Use artwork that reflects what you typically print for your clients.
  2. Print the same artwork on each printer you're evaluating. While each printer may have different color profiles, print multiple copies from each one.
  3. Follow each printer’s recommended heat press settings, and make prints on various fabrics, such as polyester, tri-blend, and cotton.
  4. Ensure you’re using the same type of film (e.g., hot peel) for consistency across your samples.
  5. After pressing the samples, lay them side by side to compare opacity of white ink, print vibrancy, color registration, and overall feel.
  6. Keep in mind that differences in film, ink, and adhesive powder can affect results. Make sure to document these differences as well.

If a company refuses to print your artwork or won’t use the film you prefer, cross them off your list. If they can’t accommodate your needs while trying to sell you something, imagine the level of support you’ll get once you’ve already made a purchase.

Production Speed: Don’t take production speed claims at face value—see it in action! If you’re able to visit the demo site, track the printer’s output. For example, mark the film in 10-foot increments and start timing as the print passes each mark. Expect issues with registration if the printer is printing at high speeds (e.g., 400 linear feet per hour). In reality, on a 5-head X5 DTF printer, the maximum production speed is around 120 linear feet per hour. While you could push this to 300 feet, it’s not practical or manageable. If you need faster production, consider purchasing another unit.

Warranty: Read the fine print on warranties carefully. Many machines, especially those from China, come with no or limited warranty coverage. For example, the X5 DTF printer doesn’t offer a standard warranty. However, you can purchase an extended warranty and receive a box of spare parts. Since most failures tend to happen in the same areas, it’s important to factor this into your decision.

Conclusion:

We want to help you make an informed decision about investing in DTF technology and give you the knowledge needed to succeed. If you’re just starting out, we recommend purchasing transfers from a reputable company and building your DTF business first. Learn the process before attempting to build both your business and your technical expertise simultaneously.
