How Does DTF Printing Work? A Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Design Preparation

Before printers start, your design is created or finalized in RIP software (Raster Image Processor). This software prepares your artwork — including any white base layers — and optimizes it for printing to whichever printer you have. 2. Printing on Film

The printer pushes your design onto special coated PET DTF film using specially formulated DTF water-based inks. When the RIP software converts the image, it will reverse it onto the film. FIrst the printer will print CMYK colors typically, then it will go over the top of that image, printing a white layer.  As the white ink is the only ink created to pick up the adhesive powder.

3. Applying Adhesive Powder

Once printed, the wet ink on film is immediately coated with DTF adhesive powder. This adhesive is what later bonds the design to the garment during heat pressing. 4. Curing the Print

The film now goes through a curing stage — often via a conveyor dryer or heat press — where the powder melts and becomes tacky. This step prepares the print for its final transfer. Smaller printers may not come with dryers, so people have to do this manually with a heat source semi-curing the adhesive to prepare it for the heat press application.

5. Heat Press Transfer

The cured film is placed onto your garment and pressed at the correct temperature and pressure. A heat press causes the adhesive powder to bond the ink layers to the fabric.  (Recommended settings)

6. Peeling and Final Press

After heat pressing, the film is peeled away (cold or hot peel) — leaving the design permanently on the fabric. Often, a quick second press improves wash durability and hand feel.
