Common DTF Pressing Mistakes

Common DTF Pressing Mistakes

Steve Southard

Why Pressing Matters More Than You Think

If your DTF transfers look great on film but fail on the shirt, the problem is usually the pressing step—not the print. The good news: most issues are easy to fix once you know what to look for.

Mistake #1: Using the Wrong Pressure

Pressure is just how hard your heat press pushes down.

  • Too light: The design won’t stick properly and may peel off
  • Too heavy: The transfer can crack or feel stiff

Beginner tip: Start with medium pressure and adjust slightly based on results.

Mistake #2: Skipping the Pre-Press

Pre-pressing means pressing the blank shirt for a few seconds before applying your transfer.

Why it matters:

  • Removes moisture from the fabric
  • Smooths out wrinkles

Skipping this step can cause:

  • Bubbling
  • Poor adhesion

Beginner tip: Pre-press for 5–10 seconds every time—it makes a big difference.

Mistake #3: Uneven Heat

If your press isn’t heating evenly, parts of your design won’t stick the same way.

This can lead to:

  • Patchy or faded areas
  • Some parts peeling while others stay

Beginner tip: Make sure your press is fully heated and apply even pressure across the design.

Mistake #4: Pressing Dirty Shirts

It might seem harmless, but lint, dust, or oils on the fabric can block the transfer from sticking.

Beginner tip:

  • Use a lint roller before pressing
  • Avoid touching the pressing area with your hands

Mistake #5: Peeling Too Soon (or Too Late)

DTF transfers often require a specific peel timing—either instant, hot, warm, or cold.

If you peel at the wrong time:

  • The design can lift or tear
  • The surface can look dull or damaged

Beginner tip: Always follow the transfer instructions for peel timing.

Simple Takeaway

A great print can still turn into a bad shirt if the pressing step goes wrong. Focus on getting your pressure, heat, and timing right—and your results will improve fast.
