How to Install a Printhead on a 3-Head DTF Printer
Steve SouthardReplacing a printhead is one of the most critical maintenance procedures on a DTF printer. Proper installation ensures accurate print registration, reliable ink delivery, and prevents damage to expensive printheads and electronics. This guide outlines the recommended process for installing a printhead on a 3-head DTF printer using Epson i3200 printheads.
Before You Begin
Required Tools
- Clean lint-free wipes
- Protective gloves
- New ribbon cables (recommended)
- Stubby adjustable wrench or small ratchet
- #2 phillips screwdriver
- stubby phillips
- Cleaning solution if needed
- Flashlight or inspection light
Safety Precautions
- Power off the printer before beginning.
- Protect all removed printheads by wrapping them in lint-free cloths and placing them in sealed bags.
- Avoid touching the nozzle plate or electrical contacts.
- Work in a clean environment free from dust and contaminants.
Step 1: Prepare the Printhead Carriage
Before installing the new printhead, inspect the printhead mounting area carefully.
Clean the Mounting Surface
Remove any ink residue from:
- Printhead seating surfaces
- Mounting brackets
- Contact areas around the printhead slot
It is especially important that ink does not contaminate the printhead electrical ports. Ink inside the connector area can lead to communication failures or permanent printhead damage.
Position Ribbon Cables
Move the ribbon cables out of the way to provide clear access to the printhead slot. On many machines, opening the upper cover allows the ribbon cables to be folded toward the rear of the printer until installation begins.
Step 2: Identify Printhead Orientation
Before connecting any cables, verify the printhead orientation.
Mounting Hole Layout
The printhead mounting pattern is designed to prevent incorrect installation:
- Two mounting holes are located on the left side.
- One mounting hole is located on the right side.
Use this pattern to verify proper orientation before proceeding.
Step 3: Install the Ribbon Cables
The printhead uses four ribbon cable connections:
- Left Top
- Left Bottom
- Right Top
- Right Bottom
Understanding Cable Orientation
Each ribbon cable has:
- A contact side with exposed metal conductors
- A non-contact plastic side
The metal contacts must face the correct direction when inserted.
Lower Connectors
Insert the ribbon cable with the metal contacts facing downward.
Upper Connectors
Insert the ribbon cable with the metal contacts facing upward.
Installation Tips
- Insert each ribbon cable straight into the connector.
- Ensure cables are centered and fully seated.
- Do not force the connectors.
- Verify all four cables are installed evenly.
Recommended Practice
Replace ribbon cables whenever they are disconnected during a printhead replacement. Repeated insertion and removal can weaken cable integrity and create intermittent communication issues.
Step 4: Position the Printhead
Once the ribbon cables are connected:
- Carefully lower the printhead into the carriage slot.
- Prevent the nozzle plate from contacting any surface.
- Ensure the ribbon cables are not pinched or twisted.
The printhead should rest naturally within the mounting location before hardware is installed.
Step 5: Install the Damper Bracket
Place the damper bracket over the printhead.
Installing Mounting Screws
- Start all mounting screws before tightening any of them.
- Leave the screws loose enough for minor printhead adjustment.
- Verify the printhead can still move slightly within the mounting slot.
Important
Do not fully tighten any screw until final positioning is complete.
Step 6: Verify Cap Station Position
Before final tightening, confirm the cap station is in the lowered position.
Why This Matters
If the cap station is raised:
- Spring pressure pushes against the printhead.
- Alignment becomes difficult.
- Printhead positioning accuracy may be affected.
With the cap station lowered, the printhead can be positioned correctly without resistance.
Step 7: Seat the Printhead Correctly
Proper printhead seating is critical for print registration.
Positioning Method
While the mounting screws remain slightly loose:
- Pull the printhead fully to the left.
- Pull the printhead fully toward the front.
- Maintain pressure in this position while tightening.
Although the movement available is very small—typically around 1 mm—it significantly affects print alignment and color registration.
Tightening Procedure
Once seated:
- Tighten each screw until it contacts the bracket.
- Add approximately ¾ of a turn beyond contact.
- Ensure the screws are snug but not overtightened.
Warning
Overtightening can crack the printhead housing and permanently damage the printhead.
Step 8: Install the Dampers
After the printhead is secured, reinstall the dampers.
CMYK Damper Order
For CMYK heads, install dampers from left to right:
- Yellow
- Magenta
- Cyan
- Black
Installation Procedure
- Clean any excess ink from the dampers.
- Align each damper with its corresponding ink inlet.
- Carefully slide the damper over the printhead barb fitting.
- Press gently until fully seated.
Important Notes
- Never force a damper into place.
- All components are plastic and can be damaged by excessive force.
- If resistance is encountered, stop and verify alignment.
Step 9: Verify Damper Seating
Inspect the dampers after installation.
Proper Installation Indicators
- All dampers sit at the same height.
- Damper tops appear level across the printhead.
- No damper is tilted or partially raised.
If one damper sits higher than the others, it is likely not fully seated on the printhead fitting.
Plunger Orientation
When installing dampers, keep all damper plungers facing the same direction. This allows for consistent movement as the dampers expand and contract during operation.
Final Inspection Checklist
Before returning the printer to service, verify:
☐ Printhead is seated fully left and forward
☐ All mounting screws are secure
☐ Ribbon cables are fully inserted and centered
☐ Ribbon cable orientation is correct
☐ Dampers are installed in the correct color order
☐ Dampers are fully seated and level
☐ No ink contamination is present on electrical contacts
☐ No tools or wipes remain inside the printer
After Installation
Once all printheads have been installed:
- Open any pinch clips or ink line clamps.
- Prime the ink system as required.
- Perform a nozzle check.
- Run head alignment procedures.
- Verify print registration and color-to-color alignment.
A properly installed printhead will provide stable ink flow, accurate registration, and consistent production performance. Taking the time to correctly seat the printhead and verify cable orientation can prevent many of the common issues encountered after printhead replacement.
