Why Would DTF Ink Not Stick to the Film?

Why Would DTF Ink Not Stick to the Film?

Steve Southard

Why DTF Ink Fails to Stick to Film

When DTF ink doesn’t properly adhere to the film, everything downstream fails:

  • Powder won’t bond correctly
  • Transfers peel inconsistently
  • Prints look weak or patchy

This issue is almost always caused by surface incompatibility or environmental conditions.

The 6 Main Causes of Ink Adhesion Failure

1. Low-Quality or Incompatible Film

Not all PET films are created equal.

Cheap or inconsistent coatings:

  • Reject ink instead of holding it
  • Cause beading or separation

Fix:

  • Use high-quality coated DTF film
  • Stay consistent with suppliers

2. Incorrect Print Side

This sounds basic—but it happens often.

Printing on the wrong side:

  • Ink won’t adhere at all
  • Powder won’t stick properly

Quick check:

  • Lightly scratch surface
  • Coated side has slight resistance

3. Humidity Problems

DTF is highly sensitive to moisture.

  • High humidity → ink spreads / won’t anchor
  • Low humidity → static issues

Ideal range:

  • 40–60% humidity

4. Ink Formulation Issues

Not all inks behave the same.

Problems include:

  • Incorrect viscosity
  • Separation in white ink
  • Poor-quality pigments

Fix:

  • Use consistent ink system
  • Shake white ink daily
  • Maintain circulation if available

5. Dirty or Contaminated Film

Dust, oil, or residue:

  • Prevent ink from bonding
  • Cause uneven prints

Fix:

  • Store film in clean environment
  • Avoid touching print surface

6. Printer Settings / Ink Laydown

If ink isn’t laid down properly:

  • It won’t anchor to coating

Issues include:

  • Too little ink
  • Incorrect pass settings
  • Improper resolution

Fix:

  • Increase ink density slightly
  • Adjust RIP settings

How to Diagnose the Issue

Visual Signs

Problem

Likely Cause

Ink beading up

Bad coating or humidity

Patchy adhesion

Dirty film or ink issue

Ink wipes off easily

Wrong side or poor coating

Step-by-Step Fix Process
  1. Confirm correct film side
  2. Check humidity levels
  3. Inspect ink condition (especially white)
  4. Test different film batch
  5. Adjust ink density in RIP software
Pro Tips from Production Shops
  • Always test new film before full runs
  • Keep film sealed when not in use
  • Avoid mixing film brands mid-production
  • Standardize your environment

If ink isn’t sticking to film, don’t guess.

It’s almost always one of three things:

  • Film quality
  • Environment
  • Ink condition

Fix those, and your entire DTF workflow becomes more consistent.
