The Right Adhesive & Proper Pressing Makes A Big Difference? Real-World Testing

The Right Adhesive & Proper Pressing Makes A Big Difference? Real-World Testing

Steve Southard

One of the biggest misconceptions in DTF printing is that all TPU adhesive powders are essentially the same. Many decorators focus on price per pound, assuming every powder will produce similar results if they simply increase the heat press temperature or pressure.

After years of servicing DTF printers and testing consumables in production environments, I've found exactly the opposite.

Your choice of adhesive powder directly affects:

  • Heat press temperature
  • Press pressure
  • Dwell time
  • White opacity
  • Handfeel
  • Wash durability
  • Productivity
  • Overall print quality

Recently, while servicing several Imperial X5 DTF Production Systems at one of our customers' facilities, I had the opportunity to compare different powder formulations under identical printing conditions.

The Test

The customer and I were both running:

The only variable was the adhesive powder and the heat press settings.

Their production presses were set to:

  • 345°F
  • 12 seconds
  • 50–70 lbs. of pressure

Those settings immediately caught my attention.

In my experience, those temperatures and pressures are considerably higher than necessary for many modern TPU powders and can actually reduce print quality rather than improve it.

For comparison, I printed the same transfer using Imperial DTF Starbase Fine-Grain Powder and pressed it at:

  • 285°F
  • 10 seconds
  • 25 lbs. of pressure

The Results

Better White Opacity

Using a spectrophotometer, I measured the white opacity (L*) of both transfers.

The Starbase transfer measured an L value of 91*, while the customer's transfer measured 88.

Although the numerical difference appears small, the improvement was clearly visible.

My conclusion is that excessive heat and pressure forced the adhesive deeper into the garment fibers. Instead of allowing the white layer to remain on top of the fabric where it reflects more light, the transfer became embedded into the textile.

By using lower temperature and pressure, the transfer remained closer to the surface, producing noticeably better opacity.

DTF RulesSofter Handfeel

The Starbase transfer also produced a significantly softer feel.

Instead of creating a heavy plastic layer, the transfer flexed naturally with the garment.

No Press Box

Another immediate difference was the appearance of the garment after pressing.

The customer's higher pressure left a noticeable press box surrounding the artwork.

Even after laundering, much of that impression remained.

Using approximately 25 lbs. of pressure, my transfer showed virtually no press marks while maintaining excellent adhesion.

Why Does This Happen?

The answer lies in TPU chemistry.

Not all DTF adhesive powders share the same:

  • Particle size
  • Resin formulation
  • Melt temperature
  • Flow characteristics
  • Hardness
  • Adhesion strength

Some powders require more aggressive heat and pressure to fully activate.

Others melt efficiently at lower temperatures while producing a softer, brighter, more flexible transfer.

That is precisely why Imperial DTF offers three different adhesive powders instead of a single "one-size-fits-all" solution. DTF Adhesive Powder

Starbase Fine-Grain DTF Powder

If your goal is premium everyday production with outstanding detail, Starbase continues to be one of my personal favorites.

Its ultra-fine particle size allows excellent coverage on fine details while requiring relatively low heat press settings.

During my testing, Starbase consistently delivered:

  • Excellent white opacity
  • Softer handfeel
  • Outstanding adhesion
  • Fine detail reproduction
  • Lower pressing temperatures
  • Reduced press marks

For many production shops, Starbase provides an excellent balance of quality, productivity, and value. At roughly $10.99 per pound when purchased in larger quantities, it's one of the best values available in premium TPU adhesive powders.

Galactic White Booster Powder

Galactic White Booster isn't simply another adhesive powder—it's designed for decorators who want to maximize print appearance.

Its unique white formulation can increase the opacity of your transfers while producing one of the softest handfeels we've tested.

Imperial DTF's testing has shown approximately a 2.7% increase in white opacity compared to standard powders, while also allowing some shops to reduce white ink usage and still maintain excellent brightness.

If your customers demand premium retail-quality transfers with vibrant whites and an exceptionally soft feel, Galactic White Booster is an outstanding option.

It's especially well suited for:

  • Fashion apparel
  • Athletic wear
  • Premium branded merchandise
  • High-end contract printing

Kyber Crystal DTF Powder

Every production environment is different.

Some shops routinely decorate heavy fabrics, workwear, performance materials, or garments where maximum adhesion is more important than achieving the absolute softest handfeel.

That's where Kyber Crystal shines.

Kyber Crystal is formulated to provide aggressive bonding characteristics for demanding applications while maintaining excellent durability and wash resistance.

If adhesion is your primary concern, Kyber Crystal deserves serious consideration.

Which Powder Should You Choose?

Rather than asking which powder is "best," the better question is:

Which powder is best for your production environment?

Starbase

Choose Starbase if you want:

  • Outstanding everyday production
  • Fine detail
  • Lower press temperatures
  • Excellent softness
  • Great overall value

Amazing DTF Powder

Choose Galactic White Booster if you want:

  • Maximum white opacity
  • The softest handfeel
  • Premium retail-quality transfers
  • Reduced white ink consumption
  • OEKO-TEX Certified materials

Kyber Adhesive

Choose Kyber Crystal if you want:

  • Maximum adhesion
  • Tough garment performance
  • Aggressive bonding
  • Excellent durability on demanding fabrics

One lesson from this testing became very clear:

If your transfers require extreme temperatures and heavy pressure just to achieve a proper peel, don't automatically assume your heat press settings are correct.

Evaluate your adhesive powder.

Changing the powder may allow you to lower your press temperature, reduce pressure, improve opacity, eliminate press marks, and produce a noticeably softer transfer—all without changing your printer, ink, or film.

At Imperial DTF, we don't believe one adhesive powder is perfect for every application. That's why we offer Starbase, Galactic White Booster, and Kyber Crystal—three premium TPU powders designed for different production goals.

Choosing the right powder for the job can have just as much impact on print quality as the printer itself.
