Can I switch out the ink in my DTF printer by myself?

There are plenty of manufacturers and distributors who’ll tell you it’s no problem to switch to their DTF inks, and technically, they’re right. However, if you don’t make the change properly, it could damage your printheads and other important components. We want to earn your ink business, but we want to do it the right way.

VERY IMPORTANT: Do not just pour ink in with other inks without checking the compatibility first. DTF inks have many different recipes, and many of them do not interact with one another very well.

Before you do anything check with us first:

First, figure out what ink brand or series you're currently using and let us know. We know of some inks that are being sold under a different name, but same manufacturer. Knowing which ink you currently have can help us determine if our inks are compatible with your existing setup. If they are, then you won't need to do an ink flush. If they are not, you will need to do a complete ink flush before filling with any new ink.

Ink Flush – Can You Do It Yourself?

The answer to this depends on your experience and comfort level working with digital printers. We’re not trying to talk down to anyone—we simply want to save you from costly mistakes. Switching inks isn’t difficult, but it can get messy fast if you don’t follow a careful, step-by-step process.

We highly recommend having an experienced technician handle the ink swap. While there’s an upfront cost, the savings in ink and the improved print quality you’ll get with Imperial DTF Inks will make it worthwhile. Plus, it helps minimize downtime in case something goes wrong during the process. If you need recommendations for a technician, fill out the form below, and we’ll have someone contact you.

Taking the DIY Route?

If you’re set on doing this yourself, here’s what you should do first:

  1. Contact the manufacturer of your printer and ask for detailed instructions on how to properly switch inks.
  2. Don’t just “wing it”—it could lead to costly downtime, mistakes, and headaches.
  3. If your manufacturer or distributor doesn’t provide clear instructions and you still want to proceed on your own, fill out the form below. We may be able to help.

Wondering if It’s Worth It?

Absolutely! You’ll be glad you switched to Imperial DTF Inks. We’ve been using these inks nationwide, and the manufacturer has strict quality control, ensuring consistently high-quality DTF inks. Here are a few reasons why switching to Imperial DTF Inks is a great choice:

  • Master Series inks are made in the USA, and the opacity of the white inks will surprise you. Plus, you won’t have to worry about ink shortages.
  • Better pricing when you buy more.
  • Experienced production digital printers—we’re not backed by an investment group, just a small group of individuals dedicated to providing great products at the best prices. If we get better pricing, we pass it on to you!
USA Made DTF Ink

As for the feel of our ink—there’s hardly any feel to digital ink at all, so don’t fall for any claims that it’s “better.” If someone makes that claim, call them out on it!

We hope this article helps. Yes, we know you were probably looking for step-by-step instructions on switching inks, but we’re not posting that online—have you seen the forum groups out there? They can be brutal! 😜
