Are You Buying a Genuine Epson i3200 Printhead — and Not a Refurbished Knockoff

The Epson i3200 has become one of the most widely used industrial inkjet printheads in the DTF, sublimation, UV, textile, signage and wide-format printing markets. That popularity has created a large replacement market—and with it, a serious problem for buyers: not every printhead advertised as a “new genuine Epson i3200” is necessarily a new genuine Epson printhead.

The challenge is that a refurbished or previously used i3200 can look remarkably similar to a new one. A seller can clean the housing, replace packaging and make a used head appear new.

So how do you protect yourself?

The answer is not to rely on one visual feature. You need to establish a chain of evidence: the exact Epson model, packaging, identification information, physical condition, seller provenance, and—most importantly—whether the seller is willing to stand behind the head as new and genuine.

First: Understand What an Authentic i3200 Actually Is

Epson's official industrial printhead documentation identifies the i3200 family as a PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead. The I3200(4) family includes A1, E1 and U1 versions for different ink technologies. Epson also produces the eight-color I3200(8) family, including A1HD and S1HD variants. (Epson)

For the standard four-channel i3200, Epson specifies dimensions of approximately 69.1 × 59.5 × 35.6 mm, 3,200 nozzles, eight nozzle rows and a 33.8 mm effective print width. (Epson)

That matters because “i3200” is not a generic name for one interchangeable head.

For example:

  • I3200(4)-A1 — aqueous inks
  • I3200(4)-E1 — eco-solvent
  • I3200(4)-U1 — UV
  • I3200(8)-A1HD — aqueous, eight-color/high-definition configuration
  • I3200(8)-S1HD — UV/eco-solvent/solvent/oil applications

Before worrying about whether a head is genuine, make sure you are buying the correct genuine head.

What a Genuine Epson i3200 Package Looks Like

Here is an example of packaging publicly shown by an i3200 distributor.

Notice several recurring characteristics:

 

  • Brown Epson-style cardboard packaging
  • A dedicated product label
  • Epson branding
  • A parts code
  • An item/model designation
  • Country of origin
  • Individual head ID
  • Barcode
  • Protective packaging around the head

For example, one photographed package identifies the part as “PRINT HEAD, I3200(4)-A1” and includes a parts code, “QA passed,” country of origin and a unique head ID.

Another example shows the printhead protected inside a silver foil pouch with an identification label.

But here's an important warning:

Packaging alone does NOT prove authenticity.

A counterfeit/refurbishment operation can reuse genuine boxes, reproduce labels, or transfer a genuine-looking label onto another head.

1. Start With the Seller, Not the Head

This is probably the most overlooked part of buying an i3200.

Epson's own industrial printhead FAQ says that printheads can be purchased through Epson sales companies worldwide, and Epson provides technical support through those sales companies. (Epson)

That gives you a much stronger starting point than an anonymous marketplace seller who simply says:

“100% original Epson.”

Before buying, ask:

Where did this head come from?

A reputable seller should be able to tell you whether it was sourced through:

  • Epson
  • an Epson sales company
  • an established industrial-printing distributor
  • an established printer OEM/distributor

Be cautious when the answer is:

“Factory direct.”

That phrase means very little by itself.

2. Ask for Photographs of the ACTUAL Head You Will Receive

This is one of the best protections you have.

Don't settle for the stock photograph on the seller's website.

Ask the seller:

“Please send me photographs of the box and serial number of the printhead(s), if you ask for the printhead as well, they will have to open the box and break the seal, so it defeats the purpose of the picture”

A legitimate supplier should understand why you're asking.

You want photographs of:

The outside of the box

Look for:

  • clean printing
  • consistent label quality
  • correct model
  • correct parts information
  • barcode
  • head ID
  • Epson branding
  • intact factory packaging

The protective packaging

Look for evidence that the head has been opened.

The head itself

Ask for photographs of:

  • nozzle plate
  • connector/electrical area
  • ink ports
  • mounting holes
  • housing
  • identification markings

And compare the photographs to the official Epson documentation for the exact model.

3. Check the Part Number Against Epson's Documentation

This is one of the most useful checks.

Epson publishes technical documentation for the I3200 family. Its current I-Series documentation lists the I3200(4)-A1, I3200(4)-E1 and I3200(4)-U1, as well as the I3200(8) variants. (Epson)

Don't simply search Google for:

“Epson i3200 printhead.”

Find the exact model you're supposed to receive.

Then compare:

Seller's part/model → Epson's documentation → physical head → packaging

All four should agree.

If you're buying an A1 and the seller can't clearly establish that it is an A1, stop.

If you're buying an E1 and the seller simply says:

“It is compatible with all i3200 printers,”

that's another red flag.

The different versions are designed around different ink technologies. Epson's specifications specifically distinguish A1, E1 and U1. (Epson)

4. Measure the Head

This is a surprisingly useful test.

For the standard I3200(4), Epson specifies approximately:

69.1 × 59.5 × 35.6 mm

and a weight of approximately 80 g. (Epson)

The I3200(8)-A1HD is taller at approximately 36.7 mm, with Epson listing a weight of approximately 78 g. (Epson)

That gives you a useful physical cross-check.

Don't use dimensions as the only authentication method.

A refurbisher can start with a genuine Epson housing.

The purpose of measuring is to catch obvious inconsistencies—not to prove authenticity by itself.

5. Inspect the Nozzle Plate Carefully

This is where things get much more interesting.

A genuine i3200 is an extremely precise MEMS printhead. Epson identifies the standard I3200(4) as a PrecisionCore MicroTFP head with 3,200 nozzles arranged in eight rows. (Epson)

A genuinely new head should not look like a head that has spent months printing ink.

Look closely at the nozzle plate.

Things that should make you suspicious:

  • ink staining
  • dried ink
  • residue around the nozzle area
  • scratches
  • cleaning marks
  • fingerprints
  • corrosion
  • discoloration
  • obvious liquid contamination
  • damaged protective surfaces
  • signs that someone has wiped or polished the plate

One important caveat:

A clean nozzle plate does not prove a head is new.

Professional refurbishers can clean heads extremely well.

That's why visual inspection is only one part of the authentication process.

6. Look for Evidence of Previous Installation

This is particularly important when a seller advertises a head as:

“Brand new.”

A previously installed printhead may have subtle evidence that it has been mounted in a printer.

Look carefully at:

Mounting holes: Are there marks around the screws?

Housing: Are there scratches or compression marks?

Ink ports: Is there evidence of ink having entered the head?

Connectors: Are there signs of previous cable insertion?

Nozzle area: Is there dried ink or cleaning residue?

Protective materials:  Does the head appear to have been removed from its original packaging and subsequently repacked?

A refurbisher may replace a box, clean the head and make the outside look excellent.

 

7. Be Suspicious of “New Old Stock” Without Documentation

You will sometimes encounter extremely cheap i3200 heads advertised as:

  • New
  • Original
  • Genuine
  • Factory surplus
  • Old stock
  • Excess inventory
  • Export surplus
  • Unused
  • OEM

Some of these descriptions may be legitimate.

But the words themselves don't prove anything.

Where did the inventory come from?

If the answer is vague, you don't really know what you're buying.

8. Price Is a Warning Signal—Not an Authentication Test

This is where buyers get into trouble.

Suppose you find one seller charging $1900 and another charging $650.

The temptation is to conclude:

“They're both i3200s, so I'll take the $650 one.”

That's dangerous.

The lower-priced head may be:

  • refurbished
  • used
  • recovered from a machine
  • old inventory
  • incorrectly identified
  • defective
  • counterfeit
  • or simply a legitimate head being sold through a different supply chain

You cannot determine authenticity from price alone.

However, an unusually low price should increase the amount of due diligence you perform.

9. Don't Confuse “Genuine Epson” With “Unlocked”

Another term buyers encounter is:

Unlocked

An unlocked i3200 is not automatically counterfeit.

Likewise, “coded,” “uncoded,” “unlocked,” or similar terminology can refer to how the head is configured for a particular printer/control system.

The important question is:

What exactly has been changed, and by whom?

Ask the supplier to explain:

  • what “unlocked” means
  • whether the head has ever been installed
  • whether the head has been electrically modified
  • whether any board or memory has been altered
  • whether Epson's original identification remains intact

Don't assume that “unlocked” means “refurbished.”

But don't assume it means “brand new,” either.

10. Compare the Head to Epson's Official Specifications

This is one of the safest things you can do because it doesn't depend on what a reseller says.

Use those documents as your baseline—not photographs from Alibaba, eBay or another reseller.

The Biggest Red Flags

If I were buying an i3200, these would make me stop and investigate:

🚩 “100% original” but no actual photos

The seller only uses the same stock photo found on dozens of websites.

🚩 Price dramatically below the established market

Cheap isn't automatically fake, but an extreme price difference deserves investigation.

🚩 Seller won't provide the head ID

Especially when selling an allegedly new OEM head.

🚩 “New” head with ink residue

Potential evidence of previous use.

🚩 Scratches around mounting holes

Potential evidence of previous installation.

🚩 Ink around ports

Potential evidence of previous use or testing.

🚩 Repackaged or generic packaging

Particularly when the seller claims it is factory-new.

🚩 “Compatible with all i3200 printers”

🚩 Seller says “refurbished is the same as new”

It isn't.

A refurbished head may work perfectly, but refurbished and new are two different products.

The Best Buying Strategy

If you're spending several hundred dollars on an i3200, I'd use this process.

Before ordering

  1. Identify the exact model. A1? E1? U1? A1HD? S1HD?
  2. Find the corresponding Epson specification sheet. Don't rely on the seller's description.
  3. Request the packaging label and head ID.
  4. Ask whether it has ever been installed.
  5. Ask whether it is refurbished, reconditioned, recovered or aftermarket.
  6. Pay through a method that gives you meaningful buyer protection.
  7. Keep all photographs, messages and invoices.
  8. Photograph the unopened package.
  9. Inspect the nozzle plate.
  10. Inspect mounting holes, connectors and ink ports.
  11. Compare the physical head against Epson's documentation
  12. Only then install it.


One More Important Point: Don't Destroy Your Evidence

This is something buyers often overlook.

The moment you install a printhead, you introduce variables:

  • ink chemistry
  • ink pressure
  • dampers
  • capping station
  • flushing
  • electrical connections
  • head alignment
  • firmware
  • waveform settings
  • operator installation technique

If the head doesn't work afterward, the seller may claim:

“You damaged it during installation.”

That's why documenting the head before installation is so important.

Photograph:

  • box
  • labels
  • head ID
  • nozzle plate
  • connectors
  • ink ports
  • mounting surfaces

Then keep those photographs with your purchase records.

And remember: a refurbished genuine Epson head and a counterfeit head are not necessarily the same thing. A refurbished head can contain an authentic Epson printhead that has been cleaned, tested and resold. The problem occurs when it is represented to the buyer as brand-new OEM.

That's ultimately what you're trying to protect yourself against: not merely buying an Epson i3200, but paying new-OEM money for something that has already lived a previous life.
