Heat Press Fundamentals for DTF

Heat Press Fundamentals for DTF

Steve Southard

The heat press is a critical step in the DTF process, involving many variables. Below are recommendations for choosing and operating the correct equipment to ensure high-quality results.

Choosing a Heat Press

Manual Clamshell vs. Automatic Shuttle

There are numerous options in the heat press market and everyone seems to have their favorites, often due to what we are familiar with.  I prefer manual clamshell presses over pneumatic options, crazy, right?  To me the pneumatic presses often have excessive cycle times slowing me down, and the less expensive ones typically lack durability in their air cylinders. In addition, with the pneumatic presses, the air supply fluctuations can make pressure readings inaccurate. Meaning you might be putting too much or too little pressure down, and this will definitely mess up your time and temp. If you do use a pneumatic press, you must use clean, dry air to avoid ruining the components with moisture. With a manual clamshell, you can feel and verify the exact pressure as you lock it down.

Design and Build Quality

Look for units with the control panel located behind the heated platen rather than directly over it. Excessive heat from the platen can cook the wiring harness and ruin circuit boards. I also strongly recommend US-made equipment. These units typically have higher build quality and meet strict UL (fire and electrical safety) and CE (health and safety) certifications, which many imported units do not.

Key Features

  • Slide-out Pallets: These offer better access and easier garment loading without requiring you to work too close to the heated platen.
  • Laser Alignment Systems: These are excellent assets for ensuring accuracy across long runs, particularly for difficult placements like the left chest. But we will tell you this, you do not have to pay a lot for laser alignment, you can find pretty inexpensive units online.
  • Warranty and Support: For a production shop, limiting downtime is essential. Ensure your press comes with a manual, electrical schematics, and accessible replacement parts.

Heating Configuration

Our testing shows that while bottom heating can reduce overall press time, it often interferes with the ability to "hot-peel." The retained heat keeps the polyurethane adhesive melted, making it difficult to peel the transfer instantly. So if you go this route and really want to look at lower heat, you may have to take the shirt off the press before peeling it.

Recommended Settings

Correct settings prevent adhesion issues, press marks, or scorched garments. We recommend using top and bottom fitted Teflon sheets to eliminate the need for manual sheets on every press. Remember these are guidelines from what we use at Imperial DTF - so we know that these parameters work!

  • Cotton and Cotton Blends: 285°F for 10 seconds at 30# of pressure.
  • Polyester Garments: 265°F for 6–8 seconds at approximately 15# of pressure.

For youth garments or difficult areas like sleeves, use Teflon pillows to raise the image area. This ensures even pressure by compensating for seams, buttons, zippers, or collars that might otherwise compromise the transfer.

Additional Help

So if you are working on fine detail, or if you are using warm peel film, to speed up the process and save that fine detail you may want to consider getting a heat speeder - they will help save time and frustration.
