By Imperial DTF

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is one of the fastest-growing technologies in the custom apparel industry. If you’re new to garment decoration or exploring ways to start a print business, DTF offers a flexible, cost-effective, and high-quality solution for producing custom designs on a wide range of fabrics.

This beginner-friendly guide explains what DTF printing is, how it works, and why so many print shops are switching to DTF systems.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF printing stands for Direct-to-Film printing, a process where designs are printed onto a special transfer film and then applied to garments using heat and pressure.

Unlike traditional methods:

  • Screen printing requires separate screens for each color.
  • DTG (Direct-to-Garment) prints directly onto fabric and often requires pretreatment.
  • DTF printing prints onto film first, then transfers the design onto almost any fabric.

This process makes DTF ideal for beginners because it combines professional quality with simplified production workflows.

How Does DTF Printing Work?

The DTF process is straightforward once you understand the basic steps.

1. Create or Import Your Design

Artwork is prepared in graphic design software and processed using RIP software, which controls color output and white ink layers.

2. Print Onto DTF Film

A DTF printer prints the design onto a clear PET film using CMYK colors plus white ink. Most production systems use industrial printheads such as those manufactured by Epson for high resolution and consistency. The most popular printhead used in DTF is the i3200 EPSON printhead.  Inexpensive as far as printheads go, and they are just workhorse heads!

3. Apply Adhesive Powder

While the ink is still wet, a specialized adhesive powder is applied to the printed film. This powder allows the design to bond to the garment during heat pressing.

4. Cure the Film

The film is placed into a dryer or curing unit to melt the adhesive powder and prepare the transfer.

5. Heat Press the Design onto the Garment

The cured film is placed onto the fabric and pressed with a heat press. Heat and pressure permanently bond the design to the material.

6. Peel and Finish

After pressing, the film is peeled away, leaving a vibrant, durable print. A final press is often recommended for improved durability and softer feel.

Why Beginners Are Choosing DTF Printing

DTF has become extremely popular because it removes many of the barriers that traditionally made apparel printing complicated or expensive.

Works on Almost Any Fabric

DTF prints adhere to: Cotton, Polyester, Blends, Nylon, Performance fabrics

This eliminates the need for multiple printing methods.

No Pretreatment Required

Unlike DTG printing, DTF does not require pretreat chemicals, simplifying production and reducing setup time.

Great for Small or Large Orders

DTF works equally well for:

  • One-off custom shirtsS
  • mall business runs
  • High-volume production

This flexibility makes it ideal for startups.

Bright Colors and High Detail

DTF printing produces sharp graphics and vibrant colors thanks to the white ink base layer.

What Equipment Do You Need to Start DTF Printing?

A complete DTF setup typically includes:

  • DTF Printer (don't just look for the least expensive, look for support and or training around the specific printer you are interested in)
  • RIP Software (this is software that converts images into something the printers can understand how to print - We LOVE Wasatch)
  • DTF Film (find a good source and don't just buy the cheapest!)
  • DTF Inks (once you set up your printer, don't change without talking with a technician)
  • Adhesive Powder (find a good source and don't just buy the cheapest!)
  • Powder Shaker & Dryer (for automation, it can be done manually)
  • Heat Press (we recommend HIX Heat Presses)

Many beginners start with an integrated system that includes technical support and training to reduce the learning curve.

Common Beginner Questions About DTF Printing

Is DTF printing hard to learn?

Most users can learn the basics within a few days. Consistent production comes with practice and proper equipment setup.

How durable are DTF prints?

When produced correctly, DTF transfers can last 30–60+ washes without cracking or fading.

Is DTF printing profitable?

DTF offers strong margins because:

  • Setup costs are low
  • Labor requirements are minimal
  • Full-color prints do not increase production cost

Why DTF Printing Continues to Grow

The custom apparel industry is moving toward on-demand production, faster turnaround times, and flexible decoration methods. DTF fits perfectly into this shift by allowing print shops to produce high-quality designs without the complexity of traditional processes.

For beginners entering the industry, DTF provides one of the easiest paths to launching a professional apparel business while still allowing room to scale into higher production systems.

Final Thoughts

Direct-to-Film printing has quickly become one of the most accessible and versatile technologies in garment decoration. With the ability to print vibrant designs on nearly any fabric and handle both small and large orders efficiently, DTF is an excellent choice for beginners looking to enter the custom apparel market.

As you continue learning about DTF, understanding equipment, supplies, and workflow optimization will help you build a reliable and profitable production process.
